Storage

Storage

The storage, generally referred to as a ‘hard-drive’ is the long-term storage your device uses to save all of your files. Usually measured in Gigabytes(GB) or Terabytes(TB), a larger number means more. 1024GB = 1TB.

HDD vs SSD vs Fusion

The oldest technology of the bunch, a HDD or Hard Disk Drive is a unit made of spinning metal platters that are magnetized by motorized arms that slide back and forth across the platters similar to a very fast record player. Hard Drives can vary in the speed at which they spin anywhere from 5400RPM to 10,000RPM or more. They are known for their reliability but sacrifice speed because of all of their moving parts.

A SSD or Solid State Drive works in much the same way that your memory or RAM does. An array of memory chips are tasked with holding your data and delivering it at a very high speed. SSD drives are lighter, smaller and far outperform HDD in almost every way.

Fusion drives are an amalgam of the two previous technologies. With the help of special data management software built into OSX, a small SSD type array integrated into a Fusion drive handles your immediate storage needs, while data being accessed less frequently gets moved to an slower, larger integrated HDD. This is a good compromise between performance and price.
